My Entrepreneurship Story

My entrepreneurship story

My first exposure to entrepreneurship was when I was around seven to eight years old. Completely oblivious, my parents started a brand new optical. This was around the time of the 2008 stock market crash. From what I can remember during that time was the off brand foods and the stress my parents were in. It has been around ten to eleven years since and business has been booming. The optical is successful, has employees and regular customers who refer the optical to other potential customers.
As I got older I came to understand the hardships my parents had to endure. Opening the optical was a huge calculated risk. Besides taking care of me, my dad was supporting two other kids. He had two jobs at the same time and both were far. My mom also had two jobs; a desk job as well as taking care of me. My dad told me the conversation he had with my mom. That all his life he wanted to own an optical, and if he wasn’t going to do it now, he never would. And they both agreed to put everything they had into it. My mom quit her job and worked full time on the optical; my dad kept his jobs to keep the optical afloat because the first few years of a business do not make a profit. Eventually as time when on my dad took another leap and left both his jobs to fully invest his time into the optical. He willed it and it came true.
Enrollment in this course was not much of a decision. It was the next step for my minor, innovation. Expecting the same kind of course that I had previously taken, I came to view this class as just another obstacle. But upon looking at the first few lectures I came to understand that I can take away valuable knowledge from this class that I can use to grow a business. That is my goal.

  1. Hey Brandon maybe I missed something, but what how does Halo relate to your parents business? Nice game, though. Caught my attention!

I liked your parents' determination and persistence. It is rather easy to make risky decisions when you have only yourself to take care of. The risk exponentially increases once you take it with children to feed. My sincere respect to your parents!

  2. Hello Brandon,
your story truly shows how hard it can be when you decide to become an entrepreneur. Your parents had a rough start but through hard work and dedication they made it possible to succeed. This shows that there are certain character traits you have to have in order to become an entrepreneur. Moreover, the belief in the idea is important.
I myself have to friends who decided to come up with a business during their studies. This was really hard for them since they had to balance out school and work. However, they made it into German national TV (thats where I am from) and received a huge funding by a venture capitalist. Therefore, I can fully understand the troubles of starting a business.
However, I do not really get your picture.

  3. Greeting Brandon,

This story is really inspirational. It's hard to be able to follow a dream like that, especially when there is so much on one's plate already. I would love to hear about what kind of business you want to grow.
I am also in the same innovation minor and I personally did my entrepreneurship story about the projects we accomplished for Catalyst. I also had the same view about this class as you, but asa we work through the lectures and are working on the assignments I would have to say I agree that this class looks like it will be able to teach us valuable knowledge that we will be able to take away from this and put towards being entrepreneurs.

  4. Hello Brandon,
Your story is really interesting and portrays the hardships entrepreneurs go through in order to make their dreams come true. I believe that there is always risks when you decide to create your own business but if you work hard, like your parents did, you can be successful. I would like to say that your parents' persistence in such hard times is admirable. My parents went through a similar situation and it is always nice to see how others are also able to push through.

  5. Hi Brandon. Your entrepreneurship story is the embodiment of the American Dream. I agree with your point that it was a huge calculated risk. Your parents had the resolve to start a business at a time when others would have been discouraged. It was not without sacrifice, but your family made it through the tough times and never lost sight of the dream. Now your family’s business is thriving and a valuable part of its local economy. Going forward, hopefully you can relate the information you learn from this class to your personal experience to help shape your mindset as you pursue your entrepreneurial endeavors.

  6. Hey Brandon, first and foremost, your blog post is my favorite so far because of the cool halo picture. Anyway, life is about taking calculated risks, whether it's asking that 10 out at the bar or starting the optical while supporting multiple children. Thank you to your father for having the courage to progress in life and not be okay living a life of regularity. Respect
